UIS men’s and women’s tennis closed out their regular season on the road this past weekend, dropping all of their matches against McKendree and Southern Indiana.

On Friday, the Stars matched up against the Bearcats of McKendree. The men managed to grab two victories, but were shut out the rest of the way, losing 7-2. The doubles duo from Effingham, Cole Buehnerkemper and Hayden Esker, took the lone Stars’ win in doubles matches with a score of 8-5. In singles play, it was Esker that pulled out the only win for the Stars, taking two sets with scores of 6-1 and 6-4 in the No. 3 spot.

The Prairie Stars female competitors were shut out by the Bearcats, 9-0, which extended the McKendree women’s win streak to five straight. UIS players Elizabeth Purcell and Katie Kirschbaum were the only doubles partners to win a set. In singles play, five of the UIS athletes won at least one game before being defeated.

Saturday against Southern Indiana, both squads were swept 9-0, but they fought hard throughout.

In the opening set of men’s doubles, UIS kept it a battle but were eventually downed 8-6. In the second spot, Esker and Buehnerkemper took it all the way down to the wire in a tiebreaker, but lost in a 9-8 decision. UIS senior Jose Luis Ortega and Buehnerkemper also forced tiebreakers in their singles sets before Ortega went down after the first tiebreaker and Buehnerkemper failed to force a third set.

In the women’s matches, despite the 9-0 team loss, senior Megan Zumbahlen, in her final match at UIS, gave it her all in singles play. In doubles she and her partner Faith Hook picked up three sets before losing with a score of 8-3.
