The former long-standing home of Sangamon State University presidents, will soon be an off-campus housing option for a select group of students.

The Spencer House, located off of West Lake Shore Drive – near Lake Springfield, is minutes from UIS’ campus and will serve as an alternative to on-campus housing.

“Chancellor Koch asked that we look at providing a small-group community living/learning opportunity for a select group of residence, in order to utilize a campus resource that was sitting there underutilized for the last few years,” said Residence Life Director John Ringle. He explained that the historic residential property would present a “unique experience.”

According to Ringle, several criteria will be considered when choosing future residents. They include:

* Upperclassmen and/or graduate standing.

* Personal and academic maturity.

* High earned GPA.

* Willingness to contribute to the community as a resident.

The two-story home has four bedrooms on the second floor, including a master suite. The largest three bedrooms will accommodate two students each, with one smaller bedroom option at a private room rate. The first floor features a formal living space that may be converted into study rooms, living spaces and additional bedrooms.

Ringle said the application for Spencer House housing will soon be online through the Residence Life website.

“We definitely want this special residential experience to appeal to a mature student who can live independently and yet, cooperatively at the same time,” said Ringle.
