Over the course of the last year, several university bodies researched and spoke with the public about a possible UIS nickname change. Last month, Chancellor Susan Koch released a statement to the University announcing the Prairie Stars name would remain.
We, The Journal Editorial Board, agree with the chancellor’s decision to retain the Prairie Stars name, based on its historical significance, legacy and tradition.
The Chancellor’s Office, Athletics Department, SGA, and UIS Nickname/Mascot Task Force are to be commended for their work and efforts gathering community input. We look forward to seeing how the Prairie Stars name is incorporated into the Athletics rebrand.
There has been talk that Cosmo and the star character might “graduate” sometime in the near future. If this is the case, we are confident the rebrand will result in a unifying symbol that will better represent UIS Athletics.
While we wish $20,000 hadn’t been spent on a consultant – we are glad the Prairie Stars remain.
