UIS softball begins season 4-2

UIS softball faced “great competition” at the three-day UAM 8-State Division II Softball Classic, ending with a 4-2 record.

Coach Mat Mundell said the “first tournament of the season is about exploring and feeling out your team… [a chance] to get the new pieces together with the old pieces.”

The Bentonville, Ark. tournament began for UIS  as they went head-to-head against Missouri Southern, ending with a 9-1 win in just five innings. The next match ended with a 7-4 win for the Prairie Stars. Rockhurst suffered their second loss of the tournament in this match.

UIS went into Saturday with a 2-0 record for the tournament. In the first match of the day, the Prairie Stars faced off against Southwest Baptist and were able to continue their winning streak. UIS outscored the team 5-1.

Northwest Missouri ended UIS’ winning streak in a game that left the Prairie Stars 4-1 in the tournament. UIS managed to make the first run, but Northwest Missouri shut them out after the second inning. UIS let up two runs in the third, one in the fourth and one more in the sixth.

On Sunday, UIS split with one win and one loss. The first game, against Missouri Western, ended with a 5-10 loss for the Stars. UIS turned around and defeated Central Missouri, 5-4.

In the match against Central Missouri, UIS scored the first two runs of the game in the first inning. The Stars added another run in the third inning. Central Missouri combated this lead with four runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. UIS gained the lead that won them the game with one run in the sixth inning.

Mundell explained that this tournament was great experience for the Stars. “Especially with this winter, we’ve been stuck inside so we haven’t had a chance to get game like experiences,” he added.

Mundell said the tournament was “a chance to see what pieces we have in actual action.” The tournament hosted teams from the Midwest region, as well as some nationally ranked teams.
