At the recent Spring Campus Forum, Chancellor Susan Koch announced that the university is in the process of acquiring a waterfront property on Lake Springfield.

“Thanks to Bank of Springfield, this [property] has become available to us,” said Koch at the forum. “We’ve worked with a small group of faculty and staff, and we’re going to make [it] a multi-purpose facility.”

The 3,000-square-foot building would act as the future “UIS Field Station at Lake Springfield.”

It will be made available to faculty in biology, chemistry, and environmental studies to teach classes and provide practical educational experiences for UIS students.

The property rests on 2.4 acres, with over 400 feet of lake front and a 12-slot dock. Only a quick 20-minute walk from campus via the UIS/LLCC trail, the facility was the former home of the Fraternal Order of Police Lake Club.

The facility can also be used for art classes or retreats, and both indoor and outdoor yoga classes may be offered there as well.

While the acquisition of the facility is not yet set in stone, the chancellor and faculty involved are optimistic.

“If all goes well, and it seems to be going very well, we should own [it] as of the May board meetings,” said Koch. “Then we’ll start working on some upgrades, but the building is in very good shape.”

The property is also the home to a swan that lives just off the beach, though visitors are not encouraged to approach it, as the birds are notoriously territorial.
