Career Fair at UIS

UIS gears up for the annual event on February 17th

The UIS Career Development Center will be hosting the annual Springfield Collegiate Career Fair on Tuesday, Feb. 17 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. in TRAC. Students are encouraged to attend the fair for a variety of reasons, including the availability of potential employers for student internships, the ability to explore careers related to one’s major, and to practice networking skills.

Interested students can also attend the Career Fair Prep Workshop on Thursday, which will be held from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in room 50 of the Student Affairs Building. According to the Career Center’s website, “Being prepared for a career fair is one of the most important components to ensure a successful and productive event, both for participants and employers.”

The Career Center recommends that students do research on the event and its attendees, prepare a short pitch in which they are able to wow potential employers to market themselves quickly, and prepare a lot of resumes for the event, as they should be given to potential employers on the floor.

Students who are unable to attend the fair should make use of the Career Center’s selection of helpful materials. On the Career Center’s website students will find guides relevant to the career fair, such as how to work a room, a general guide to fairs, and a video guide on handshakes and how to make a first impression.

The Career Center also offers much help outside of the fair. Students can contact them for critiques of their resume and cover letter. Students will also be provided assistance with their resumes if needed. Mock interviews are also offered, provided the student completes the checklist available online.

In addition to helping in the professional realm, the Career Center can also help aspiring graduate students get to graduate school. Those interested in any of these services can find the Career Development Center online or stop by their office in the Student Affairs Building.
