The University of Illinois Springfield men’s soccer team played the No. 17 team in NCAA Division II even for 110 minutes on Friday night. The Prairie Stars tied Bellarmine by a 1-1 score at Kiwanis Stadium in Springfield, Ill.

Most of the statistics were similar in the game, including UIS having 11 shots and four shots on goal, and Bellarmine having 12 shots and six shots on goal.

After the two teams were scoreless for the first half, UIS broke open the scoring when Evan Paoni scored in the 67th minute. Quick passes from Mario Falsone and Dan Mahony found Paoni open on the right side of the goal, and he was able to score his first collegiate goal.

One advantage Bellarmine had over the Prairie Stars was on corner kicks where they had eight attempts, to UIS’s four. On its attempt in the 83rd minute, a Knights player got a loose ball right in front of the goal, and he was able to punch it in for the equalizer.

With the tie, UIS is now 5-4-2 overall and 3-3-2 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars will be back in action at home on Sunday with a noon game against Indianapolis.
