On Feb. 8, 2021, a UIS alum started their first day as the program coordinator of Gender and Sexuality Student Services (GSSS). Dre Duvendack attended UIS for both of her degrees. Her previous roles on campus during her time as a student were as a resident assistant, assistant editor for The UIS Journal and GSSS graduate assistant. Once she graduated, she went on to become an adjunct instructor, and now she will get to start her new job with a thorough understanding of the goals and needs of the students on campus.

Duvendack understands the importance of UIS during her developmental years, stating:

“The UIS community helped me grow into the person I am today. The experiences and mentors I had were key factors to my growth and success. Directly working with the UIS community is something I’m extremely passionate about, because it gives me the opportunity to have a similar impact on other Prairie Stars.”

She plans to go forward with many short- and long-term goals for the department, but her primary goal is to stay true to the mission of serving the UIS community. The mission for this department is the following: “Gender and Sexuality Student Services presents educational, cultural, and social opportunities for all students to challenge intolerance and promote affirmation in an effort to create a more inclusive and affirming campus climate for sexual and gender minorities.”

With a new program coordinator in the office, students should keep an eye on the events that will be coming out of GSSS. For those who are interested in being more involved with this office, Duvendack states, “Students can participate in our virtual events and stay up-to-date with the GSSS activities by following us on social media! All of our social media platforms can be found at https://www.uis.edu/gendersexualitystudentservices/.”
