The first real one late summer disturbance appeared on our Peninsula, determining a phase of strong meteorological instability. As indicated in the forecasts of recent days, starting from Wednesday 9 September the descent of one sagging of Atlantic origin towards the Mediterranean basin it interrupted the pre-existing warm and anticyclonic phase. The decidedly bright thermal contrasts and the high surface temperatures of the seas have fueled widespread storm systemsbringing heavy rains and localized hydrogeological criticalities over different regions.
In Lombardy, Piedmont, Triveneto and Liguria, strong storms caused various damage, with significant rainfall accumulations and waterspouts: in Friuli-Venezia GiuliaHowever, a woman lost her life after being stuck in her car in a flooded underpass. In the next few hours, the disturbance is expected on the Lower Tyrrhenian Sea, particularly among Campania, Calabria and northern Sicily, and on Puglia.
In the meantime, the Civil Protection has issued an orange alert for the risk of thunderstorms in sectors of Emilia Romagna, Marche, Tuscany and Veneto and a yellow alert in some areas of Lombardy, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Umbria, Lazio, Liguria and Sardinia.
The situation in the area: up to 400mm in Liguria, a fatal accident in Friuli and discomfort in urban centers
The most significant rainfall was recorded along the Liguria of the eastBetween Lombardy And Piedmonton the Triveneto and along the central Tyrrhenian coastswhere the slow evolution of the front has prolonged the duration of the phenomena.
In LiguriaBetween Val Fontanabuona and Val d’Aveto they registered significant rainfall accumulations, over 250 mm in 6 hours, to arrive at a total of 400mm in 24 hours in Parazzuolo di Rezzoaglio (GE), due to two self-healing storm nuclei on both the mornings of Wednesday 9th and Thursday 10th September.
The rise in hydrometric levels in the Apennines led to the partial flooding of the Aveto river and of Lavagna torrentwhich caused important flooding in the municipality of San Colombano Certenoli.
Also in Liguria, on the morning of Thursday 10th a majestic one was also seen waterspout in front of Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino.
In Friuli-Venezia Giulia a tragic accident occurred at Latisanain the province of Udine, where a motorist lost her life after her vehicle was left behind stuck inside a flooded underpass.
In the Lazio the rain created slowdowns especially in the capital, causing numerous floodstransport inconveniences and emergency services to remove fallen branches. Similar conditions also occurred in Umbria and in Tuscanywhere the gusts of wind associated with the storms caused trees to fall and short interruptions in the electricity supply regional.
Forecasts and movement of the disturbance towards the South
The meteorological evolution will see a gradual transfer of instability towards the southern regions. Attention remains focused on the food sector Lower Tyrrhenian Sea, particularly among Campania, Calabria and northern Sicily, and on Puglia.
Meanwhile, the central regions and the Triveneto will continue to record marked variability, with the possibility of further showers alternating with temporary clearing until Saturday morning. The first signs of a consolidated improvement they will only affect the North-West starting from Friday 11 Septemberwith the entry of drier currents.
The weather picture will tend to stabilize more during Sunday also on the rest of the country, although the models indicate the possibility of a new unstable impulse towards the middle of next week.
Temperature drop: by Saturday the main cities will almost all be below 30°C
In addition to the effects related to precipitation, the passage of the front is causing a marked change in air circulation. THE winds from the west and north-west at altitude following the disturbance are leading to a general reduction in temperatures.
The heat dropwhich began in the western sectors, will progressively extend to the entire world South et al Adriatic side. This change will bring the daily values back to typical range for the first half of Septemberwith maximum temperatures expected to remain below 30°C in almost all the main Italian cities over the weekend, putting an end to the prolonged heat phase of the previous months.
