The school is in fact the oldest high school in Florence And one of the oldest in Italy. It has existed since 1878, shortly after the unification of Italy, when, in the building that housed the College of the Scolopi Fathers, a Royal Gymnasium was founded (equivalent to the current medium and the two -year period of the superiors) who, by decree of the minister Francesco De Sanctis, was named after Galileo Galilei. In 1884 the high school was added to the gymnasium (i.e. the last three years of the superiors). The youngest, however, were university students who passed the maturity in the Covid period, without written tests. In 2025 the “remaining” was proposed again and took place on the afternoon of May 16.
The test consists of one translation from Latin to Italian. The “students” have two hours available and can use the dictionary. On the counter can only keep the pen and sheets stamped by the institute, as happens in the “real” maturity exams.
“Students” can choose between Two levels of difficulty: the basic (or non -competitive) level, for which the translations are correct and evaluated by the current students of the school; The advanced (or competitive) level, in which the tests are correct and evaluated by the teachers in collaboration with the Italian Association of Classical Culture. Participants are awarded a commemorative medal, delivered in a special ceremony held in October.
