A shock of earthquake Of magnitude 3.2 was registered in the province of Lucca, today August 28th at 3.06pm. According to data reported by INGV (National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology) the epicenter of the earthquake was located 6 km north-east of Coreglia Antelminellia small village of about 5,000 inhabitants, with a hypocentre depth of 9 km.
The shock would have been distinctly felt in the area, particularly in Media Valle. Between the municipalities closest to the epicenterwithin a radius of 20kminclude Barga, Fosciandora, Castelnuovo di Garfagnana, Bagni di Lucca and Fiumalbo. Lucca, however, is located 31 km from the epicenter, while Massa is 34 km. At the moment, however, no damage was reported to people or things.
The first shock was followed by a second earthquake of magnitude 2.6with the epicenter always close to Coreglia Antelminelli.
According to the seismic hazard map elaborated by the INGV, the epicenter of today’s earthquake falls in one medium seismic danger range, as visible in the image below. As the Institute reports, seismic hazard means the expected ground shaking at a site due to an earthquake. Indicatively, the colors associated with lower accelerations indicate less dangerous areas, where the frequency of stronger earthquakes is lower compared to the most dangerous ones: this, however, does not mean that earthquakes of greater intensity cannot occur.
The earthquake occurs less than a month after the 4.3 magnitude shock detected in Pisa on August 4, felt in much of coastal Tuscany and followed by a 3.2 magnitude earthquake.
