The government towards the abolition of the tax for cars up to 80kW: stop the tax also for motorcycles

The government will abolish car tax by 2027.

The Council of Ministers has announced its intention abolish car tax for all motorcycles and for cars small and medium poweruntil 80kW (about 109 horsepower). This is what was reported by some Palazzo Chigi sources cited by ANSA: the measure would therefore concern all types of motorcycles and beyond 70% of cars currently in circulation in Italy (around 14.5 million vehicles in total).

From the first drafts of the decree-law that emerged, we read that the car tax exemption will apply only for 2027 (from January 1st to December 31st) e only to regularly insured vehicles.

For citizens, however, there is already a limit initial: each holder will be able to benefit from it for a single vehicle. This means that those who own multiple cars or motorbikes will not be able to apply the exemption to all vehicles, but will be able to choose only one. In the case of similar vehicles, the exemption will automatically be recognized to the one with the lowest powerwhile with the same power, the means for which the tax would have been least onerous will be chosen.

The measure also concerns motorcycles and mopeds: for this category, however, the exemption is only available to those who do not own a car within the 80 kW threshold. As before, if there is more than one means of transport, the discount applies to one vehicle onlyin relation to the power or, for mopeds, the date of first registration.

To be clear, these are the majority of small cars or city cars, from the classic one Panda (although horsepower may vary depending on model) up to Renault Clio or to Citroen C3.

To understand if also the own car returns in this exemption, simply consult the registration card of your car (the so-called booklet). Alternatively, on ACI website There is a “Car Tax Calculation” section, available at this link. In this case, simply enter the region of residence and the type of vehicle: the system will provide a vehicle data sheet that includes the exact kW (in addition to the Euro emissions class).

The car tax is a car tax managed by the Regions (with the exception of Friuli Venezia Giulia And Sardinia for which the tax is managed by the Revenue Agency): according to Siope data cited by Federcarrozzierifrom the car tax derive approximately 7.1 billion euros per year, with an average of 267 euros per resident family.

The draft foresees a transfer equal to 2,293.5 million euros for the year 2027, with the aim of compensating for the reduction in revenue to the Regions.
