Campi Flegrei, 21 earthquakes in the new INGV bulletin: the lifting remains stable at 10 mm per month

The latest INGV bulletin (19-25 October) on the Campi Flegrei confirms a stable picture. Bradyseism proceeds at 10 mm per month, for a total of 33 cm from January 2025. Very weak seismicity: 21 events with maximum magnitude 0.6.

The latest bulletin from the INGV Vesuvian Observatory, referring to the week from 19 to 25 October, confirms a framework of substantial stability for the Campi Flegrei. The rate of soil lifting linked to bradyseism remains constant a 10±3 mm per monthwith a overall rise of approximately 33 cm reached in Rione Terra (Pozzuoli) starting from January 2025. The seismicity is also decidedly limited: in seven days a total of 21 seismic eventsof which just 12 located with magnitude Md≥0.0. On the geochemical front, the temperature at the Solfatara fumarole remains stable at 173°C.

Few earthquakes and possible increase in degassing in Pisciarelli

In the period between 19 and 25 October, the seismic network recorded 21 earthquakes in totalwith a maximum magnitude not exceeding 0.6.

The monitored geochemical parameters confirm the multi-year warming trends of the hydrothermal system. In the Pisciarelli area, where the degassing has been particularly intense for years, the flow of CO2 measured by the reference station remained at values highalthough slightly decreasing. However, a moderate increase in flow from a nearby station. Volcanologists report that the continuation of these high levels in the coming weeks could confirm a increase in degassing activity in the area.

Also in Pisciarelli, the average temperature stands at around 94°Ca value close to the condensation of the fumarolic fluid. In the Solfatara crater area, the average temperature of the BG fumarole remained stable at 173°Cconsistently with the upward trend of recent years.

Bradyseism continues at 10 millimeters per month

Since the beginning of February 2026, the average uplift speed in the zone of maximum deformation of the Campi Flegrei has proceeded at approximately 10±3mm per month. The deformations recorded in the last week do not show significant variations. Compared to the rates observed before February 2026 (when the uplift was traveling at around 15±3 mm/month), a slowdown is therefore confirmed. The total lift recorded by the RITE GNSS station (Pozzuoli, Rione Terra) amounts to approximately 33 cm measured since January 2025.

As INGV itself explains on the page dedicated to the most frequent responses on the situation at the Campi Flegrei, there is a close long-term link between ground rising and earthquakes, but in the short term there is no immediate correspondence. The earth’s crust, in fact, can deform and accumulate tension entire weeks without producing any noticeable shocks.

This is why we go through a phase of “seismic calm” with few earthquakes it does not automatically mean that bradyseism is dying out. At the same time, this temporary tranquility provides no useful clues for predicting whether or when stronger tremors will arrive.

Summary of the latest INGV weekly bulletin for October

In summary, the data relating to the Campi Flegrei for the week from 19 to 25 October 2026 illustrate this situation:

  • Seismicity: very limited activity, with only 12 localized earthquakes with a maximum magnitude of just 0.6, out of a total of 21 recorded events
  • Bradyseism: lifting speed stable and slowing down compared to 2025, at 10±3 mm per month
  • Geochemistry: the long-term trends in temperatures are maintained (around 173 °C in Solfatara and 94 °C in Pisciarelli). A possible venue is under close observation increase in degassing in the Pisciarelli area.
