The director of I Soliti suspects returns to the cinema with a film about the employment of Israel in Lebanon

According to reports from the American newspaper Variety, director Bryan Singer is about to return to cinemas – it is not yet known whether only in the USA or even internationally – after eight years of “exile” with a film destined to unleash enormous controversy most likely, given that he will talk about the occupation of Lebanon by Israel, a story that dates back to 1982 and which is known as the War of Lebanon, but which will obviously have a great echo. how currently it is in progress in Gaza.

Because Singer hasn’t made films for 8 years: the dismissal from Bohemian Rhapsody and the accusations of harassment

Singer directed worship films such as Superman Returns, the X-Men saga and above all the masterpiece the usual suspicions in 1995, who earned the Oscar to the actor Kevin Spacey and the screenwriter Christopher Mcquarrie.

His career, however, abruptly interrupted in 2017, when he was fired from the 20th Century Fox at the end of the filming of the biopic on the Queen Bohemian Rhapsody, and replaced by Dexter Fletcher (not accredited) to finish shooting and follow the post-production of the film.

Singer was fired after an unjustified absence that had caused a week late in production. Unreliable absences and behaviors had also been charged to him at the time of the movies of the X-Men films, but after this dismissal from Fox Singer he no longer directed a film.

Also because, in 2019, at the apex of the #Metoo movement, the Atlantic newspaper had published detailed information on the alleged sexual abuse made by Singer with minors. Already previously, in 1997, Singer had had similar problems, when two teen boys had filed a civil case for having forced them to undress totally naked for a scene in the student.

Similar statements have accompanied him throughout his career, but without ever criminal accusations: Singer’s career, who has always denied having sex with minors, had never been affected too much, until 2019.

Subsequently Singer had tried to find the Hollywood road and had been chosen by Avi Lerner of the Millennium Films as director of the film Red Sonja, but in the end he had been downloaded and in his place the film, released in recent weeks in the cinemas of Russia and the USA, was directed by Mj Bassett.

Singer’s new film with Jon Voight on the invasion of Lebanon

According to Variety, the film was shot in Greece in 2023, and the Israeli director Yariv Horovoitz was involved. The protagonist of the film is Jon Voight, the 86 -year -old father of Angelina Jolie. Between father and daughter, good blood for some time also for the different personal and political opinions of the two. Recently, Voight has expressed his support for US President Donald Trump.

It therefore seems significant that Singer’s film is, according to the first advances on the plot, on the relationship between a father, an elderly architect looking for redemption, and a son, against the background of the events of the early 80s in the Middle East.

A source that saw the definitive version of the film but is not involved in production described it to Variety as “a really well made film with potential to win film prizes” but it has also provided that there will be “a huge outbreak of controversy” due to the topic treated.

The source of Variety reported that history is set in the Middle East between the late 70s and early 80s, during the occupation of Lebanon by the Israeli army. “It gives a very negative image of Israel and could be a film that will generate polarization in opinions,” said the source of Variety. And, in this sense, it is singular that Voight participates in a film that returns a negative image of Israel, when Trump is the greatest supporter of the Netanyahu government.

Singer has lived for years in Israel and, as Variety had always reported, in recent years he had proposed the production of three-documentary films on Israel to aspiring investors.

Will Singer’s film be released in Italy on Israel?

According to Variety, an agreement for the distribution of the film in the United States is imminent, while it is not clear if the international distribution will be promoted to the next Toronto Film Festival. It is not known therefore if the film will arrive in Italy, at the cinema or on some streaming platform. Certainly, however, where he will come out he will trigger very accurate controversy.
